Les marcheurs ont lobligation de conserver un rythme constant, avec interdiction formelle de sarrêter. Après trois avertissements consécutifs, les contrevenants sont froidement abattus. Un seul en sortira vivant, avec une somme faramineuse et un prix de son choix. Habité par un motif secret, le jeune Raymond Garraty tente sa chance, nouant sur la route un fort lien damitié avec lAfro-Américain Peter McVries.
